Who qualifies for WVRx medication?

  • You must be a West Virginia resident between the ages of 18 and 65.  If you are over 65, see the “WVRx for Seniors” section.
  • You must meet income criteria as established by WVRx.
  • You must not be covered by any form of prescription drug coverage, including Medicaid, Medicare Part D, WV-CHIPS, Veteran's health benefits or any other type of prescription drug benefits.
  • Your family's household income must be between 138% and 250% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) to qualify (see chart below)

How does a patient get a prescription filled at no cost?

An approved WVRx patient must have a prescription written by a licensed provider, and mailed to WVRx with the application or have it faxed to the WVRx pharmacy at 304-414-2200.  Prescribers may also use E-Prescribing and send your prescriptions to WVHEALTHRIGHT

If a patient has a question about their medication, who do they call?

  • Patients can call the WVRx Pharmacy Toll Free at 877-388-9879 OR call the prescriber of the medication.

When should a patient call the pharmacy to get their prescription refilled?

  • Patients can call the WVRx pharmacy to refill their prescription ten days prior to their last pill.  For refills, call WVRx at 304-414-5935 or Toll Free at 877-388-9879, Ext 1. 

How do you know your personal information safe and secure?

  • West Virginia Rx uses the latest Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. Upon registering in the Health Care Practitioner’s office, the patient receives a unique ID number that links them to the West Virginia Rx pharmacy!

WVRx Eligibility is determined ANNUALLY upon receipt of the complete WVRx Enrollment Application.
Patients must reapply each year for WVRx services.
WVRx requires a $30 application processing fee with each new or renewed application. This fee is to cover postage expense. There is no charge for the medication.

How does it work?

  • You MUST provide proof of income from EVERY member of your household over the age of 18.   It must be in the form of one or more of the following sources:
    • Individuals/Married:   1040, 1040A, 1040E (If you or a household member is self-employed, include Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ)
    • SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefits Statement
    • Form 4506T or 4506T-EZ  (This form allows WVRx to request a transcript of your tax return from the IRS and have it mailed directly to us.  Forms are available from the IRS or you may request it from WVRx—NOTE:  WVRx will NOT dispense medications until we receive a copy of your IRS Tax Return or Letter from the IRS stating that you are not required to file (Proof of Non-Filing) to consider your application complete.
    • You may ALSO call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946 to “Request a Transcript” or “Proof of Non-Filing for FREE from the IRS.
    • You may also visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov to “Get Transcript Online” or “Get Transcript by MAIL”
      • GET IRS TRANSCRIPTS ONLINE
        • View and Print your transcript immediately
        • Choose among “Tax Return,” “Tax Account”, “Record of Account”, “Wage and Income” transcripts or a “Verification of Non-Filing Letter
      • GET IRS TRANSCRIPTS BY MAIL
        • Transcripts arrive in 5 to 10 calendar days
        • Choose from either a “Tax Return” or “Tax Account”
